Season Update

Hello Forester fans! It sure is hard to believe that there are only three games left in the regular season! The Foresters closed out play up in Wisconsin last weekend with two wins against Lawrence and Carroll. The Lawrence game was a good one which saw the squad go into its first overtime of the season. Multiple guys were able to step up, especially on the defensive end, and pull out the win. The Foresters then made the trip from Appleton to Waukesha to take on the Carroll Pioneers. The guys were able build a big lead in the second half thanks to some monster play from reserve big man Chris Madson and went on to win by 12. Click on the links to read full recaps of the Lawrence and Carroll games. Lake Forest now sports a record of 18-2 overall and sits atop the Midwest Conference at 14-1.

Wednesday the first set of regional rankings were released which you can see here. The Foresters are currently ranked 3rd in the Midwest region. The rankings will be released weekly for the remainder of the season and are what the NCAA uses to determine which teams get at-large bids for the national tournament after conference tournament champions are crowned. Stretch Run

The Foresters started off our big three game week off on the right foot last night with a win over the visiting Monmouth Scots. It was a great team effort with all 17 Foresters seeing action. Grinnell College Comes to Town

The Foresters return home on Saturday to take on the Grinnell Pioneers at 3 p.m. in the Sports Center. The Pioneers currently sport a 14-1 (10-1) record and we expect a great game. Come out early, enjoy the women's game at 1, and get the gym rockin'!

Season Update

It's finals time here at Lake Forest and the guys are all working hard to finish the semester out strong in the classroom. On the court, the Foresters are currently on a six game winning streak and off to a 3-0 start in the Midwest Conference play. We have had multiple guys step up on both sides of the floor and contribute to each win. Two staples of the program have really shown through so far this year. Defensively we have been able to hold our opponents to 38% shooting, and also have been able to outrebound our foes by an average of almost 10 per game. After finals conclude, the Foresters head to Wisconsin next weekend where we will return to the floor against a solid St. Norbert squad on December 17, Be sure to log on to goforesters.com for the latest on the season!

Foresters Split in Season's First Week

   Last week the Forester basketball program opened the season with a 1-1 record against two opponents from the Northern Athletics Conference. Tuesday we faces a tough Edgewood College squad and ended up on the losing end of a hard fought 61-54 contest. We were able together a solid defensive effort and held a good offensive team to 38.1 percent shooting from the field, but were only able to convert at a 36.5 percent rate on our own shots. Edgewood was able to get 12 offensive rebounds which resulted in 26 second chance points, that made a huge diffrence in the game. Senior forward Nate Bateman finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while our other senior captain Travis Clark finished with 21 points and 12 boards.
  After the loss our guys were able to avoid any emotional hangover from the previous game and came out and really fought hard against Lakeland College. In the first half Lakeland used a 1-3-1 zone to break the offensive rhythm we'd been looking for along with a very strong effort on the offensive glass to take a 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. After the break the Foresters were able to put together a strong effort and come out with the win. We were able to hold another team under 40 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle, two huge points of emphasis in practice everyday. Senior Drew Grennell had an awesome effort on the glass finishing with 14 rebounds, 9 on the offensive end. We also had three players score in double figures to finish the game. Junior guard Jeff Beck (11), senior post Travis Clark (16), and sophomore guard James Stack (18) led the balanced Forester attack.
   We head to the University of Chicago to play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday the 22nd before the Thanksgiving break, then return back to the floor for our first conference game against Beloit on Sunday the 27th at 3 p.m. in the Sportscenter.

Opening Week

We start the season against a strong Edgewood College out of Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday November 15th at 7 p.m. and then follow that up Thursday night at 7 with Lakeland College, another Wisconsin foe. Both teams return most of their squads from last year and will provide your Foresters with good early season tests. We look forward to seeing you all out next week!

Each year the Lake Forest Basketball team holds a Halloween practice, and as you can tell by this year our guys go all out! The only requirement we have is that they must be able to pass, screen, shoot, and run in their costumes. It's really a fun time and is a tradition the whole athletic department here at Lake Forest enjoys.

Mental Toughness

We recently found this video on mental toughness by Point Guard College. PGC is widely regarded as one of the best summer training programs for players through the college level not only because of what they teach on the floor, but what they are able to do off the floor in classroom sessions.

Disease Of Me

A great read and advice for any player off of Alan Stein's site. He is the current strength and conditioning coach with the storied DeMatha Catholic program out of Washington D.C. and also does work with the Nike summer grassroots programs along with just about every post season high school All-American game. Stein describes being too cool, too good, and too shy as the three development crippling symptoms of the 'disease of me'. Take a look and be sure to avoid these as you go through your preseason preparation!

Too cool: This symptom is rampant… in fact it is a borderline epidemic. Players are too cool to listen when a coach is talking, too cool to show enthusiasm during drills, too cool to warm-up properly, too cool to get on the floor for a loose ball or take a charge, and too cool let the people around them know that they don’t understand something or need some help. Players are often more concerned with ‘how they look’ then ‘how they perform.’ To paraphrase Woody Harrelson in White Men Can’t Jump – players that are too cool would ‘rather look good and lose than look bad and win.’

Too good: This symptom is tricky… because it is actually an illusion. The players who think they are too good – actually aren’t! They aren’t anywhere close to being good enough, much less too good! They are so hypnotized by their ranking, or brainwashed by their entourage, that they won’t admit they have areas of their game that need improvement. They are too good to work on their left, too good to work on their footwork, or too good to work on their mid-range game. Who needs to be able to do those things when you can dribble between your legs 19 times in a row or dunk the ball with ease? Players that are too good are often shoot 1st, pass 2nd type players. Actually, they are usually shoot 1st, shoot 2nd, and don’t pass type players. They never bother with making those around them better. If a teammate can’t hold their own on the court… that is their problem.

Too shy: This symptom is complicated as well. I don’t know if I would go as far as to say that being too shy is selfish per se; but being shy does stunt improvement. You have to be assertive if you want to get better! You can’t be too shy to ask questions. You can’t be too shy to reach out and ask for help from your coach. You can’t be too shy to verbally communicate on offense and defense. Most kids aren’t shy when it comes to texting, Twitter, and Facebook… but they quickly go into a shell when expected to speak face to face.

If you are trying to be the best player you can be… to maximize your potential and play at the highest level possible… you can’t be too cool, too good, or too shy. You need to find a cure for the ‘disease of me.’

A New Year

Another school year has begun. The guys all started classes today after arriving back on campus. The freshman class and transfers moved in last Friday and went through their orientation, while the returners came back this past Monday. After having our first team meeting yesterday afternoon, the guys are all fired up and ready to get after things in preseason conditioning! Advance Camp

We would like to thank the 120 campers who got the chance to come out and attend our Advanced Camp which ran from July 11th through 14th. Our staff really enjoyed working with a group of great young men from grades 4 to 10. Campers got the chance to improve their ball handling, shooting, and passing while also participating in nightly games. Special congratulations are in order for our camp champions in each of the three divisions. LSU of the SEC, Ohio State of the Big Ten, and North Carolina out of the ACC were all able to put together nice stretch runs and come out on top in the camp tournament. The Forester family wants to wish Junior Post player Travis Clark luck as he leaves today for a ten day trip over to participate in the Vienna Basketball Cup. Travis will join a team of other college all-stars for three games in Vienna, Austria and one more in Brno in the Czech Republic. While there he will also get the chance to visit Italy before returning back to the States. This a great opportunity for Travis and we look forward to hearing about his experience when he returns!

Ry's Run

Yesterday the team participated in the 2nd Annual Ry's Run 5k on campus. The run served as the opening event in the week leading up to Relay for Life, which will be held on starting on Friday. The highlight of the run was freshman point guard Jordan Gipson finishing third overall!

Special Olympics and Team Awards

The Foresters were able to give back to the community by volunteering at the Special Olympics Aquatic Competition. The event, held on March 19th, drew 200 athletes and over 100 students from Lake Forest volunteered. The guys really enjoyed themselves and are excited to get involved again next year.

The team also participated in the Winter Sports Recognition Ceremony on March 27th, which recognized the hard work and accomplishments of our student-athletes. Among the award recipients was junior center Travis Clark, who was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player and was a 1st Team All-Midwest Conference selection for the second straight year. Junior forward Dayton Young was selected as a Midwest Conference All-Academic performer for his hard work in the classroom and on the basketball floor. Freshman guard James Stack was selected by his peers as the teams Most Improved Player for the year. Congratulations to our award winners for the 2010-11 season.

Playing For A Cure

This past weekend the Foresters held our Playing For A Cure in honor of breast cancer awareness. The guys donned their pink shirts in warm ups and the coaching staff also participated by adding pink into their game day wardrobes. The annual event was able to raise over $3,000 for future cancer research. The day was capped off by a win against Monmouth to start our stretch run at the Midwest Conference postseason tournament.

First, the Forester family would like to give a big thanks to all the students and fans that came out this past weekend to the Black Out game against Lawrence and the White Out against Carroll. The team really appreciates the support! Congratulations also to Travis Clark on scoring his 1000th career point on Saturday in the win against Carroll.
We have 4 remaining regular season games and are preparing to make a run at the Midwest Conference Tournament. Every game at this time of the year is huge and the guys are more than ready to take on the challenge of playing four games in seven days to complete our regular season schedule. The next home game is this coming Saturday February 12th against Monmouth. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Light at The End of the Tunnel

The Foresters finish up a stretch of three games in five days today at North Central College. Following tonight's game, the guys must shift gears and prepare themselves for the semester's final exams. They will get Wednesday and Thursday to finish up any final reviewing and tests start this coming Friday. Just like in all of our games we talk to the team about competing at the highest level in the classroom. Our staff is all excited to see if the Foresters can once again ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE and meet our goal of a 3.0 team G.P.A.

We are currently sitting at 2-1 after an exciting conference road win at Beloit College on Sunday afternoon. Next up we have our first back to back on the road at Carroll and Lawrence on December 3rd and 4th. It will definitely be a huge test of mental toughness for us! Halloween Fun

This past week, members of the Forester basketball team participated in a couple of Halloween events in the community. We had a group of players go and hand out candy at the Lake Forest Park District celebration. Also, on Saturday October 29th the team participated in Forester Family Fun Days by helping pass out candy to kids that attended the home swim meet in the Sports Center.

The Exceptional Player

A great read we found searching the Internet yesterday. A lot of these are very simple things in the basketball world, but when a player is able to do all of them consistently you will find yourself an "exceptional player".

These are the things that make a player standout above the rest. The exceptional player.

1. Always plays great defense, even when his/her offense is "off"

2. Always hustles, boxes out, and rebounds

3. Sees the whole floor and is an an excellent passer, able to find the open teammate.

4. Is a good ball handler, avoids the costly turnover.

5. Can shoot from the outside.

6. Can drive the ball and finish at the hoop. You can't always rely on just an outside shot or
or driving to the basket. You must be able to do both and not allow the defense to be able to
key on either aspect of your game.

7. Looks for the open shot all the time. Don't allow yourself to be discouraged if you miss your
first couple shots. If you start "cold", get going by hustling or playing good defense. Allow the
game to come to you and get a lay-up or get to the free throw line. The shots will start falling.

8. Can make clutch free throws.

9. Stays out of foul trouble.

10. Is mentally tough and is able to sense critical times in the game. As a result he/she is able elevate both his/her and teammate's games an extra notch (especially with defense, hustle, and rebounding). Is able to make big plays in "crunch time". Keeps focus and doesn't allow
a bad call to frustrate him/her. Is also able to forget mistakes and continue to play hard.

11. Inspires and leads teammates by example, hard work, and hustle in practice and during
games. The exceptional player works harder than anyone else. You can't ask your
teammates to practice and play harder if you're not there yourself. Exceptional players
are not born...they become exceptional by hard work and dedication.

12. Understands the concepts of team and family. It takes more than skill to be a
championship team. You must have team chemistry. This includes respect for one another,
a common goal, and accountability!

13. The exceptional player is coachable. Listens and works closely with his/her coaches. Is
willing to try new things and step up when the coach is looking for leadership on and off the
court.

New Additions

The Forester Basketball family is pleased to announce the addition of two new members along with the return of a familiar face to the bench for the 2010-11 season. Kyle Taber, Dewayne Evans, and Laird Walker will be joining Coach Conger and Coach Davis on the Lake Forest sidelines this upcoming season.

Coach Taber, who is originally from Evansville, Indiana, comes to Lake Forest from Indiana University where he played for the Hoosiers from 2004 to 2009. Taber recently completed his Master’s degree in Sports Marketing.

Coach Evans was most recently at Grand Valley State University, a Division II school, where he served as a graduate assistant coach. Evans, who is originally from Chandler, Arizona, played Division III basketball at Oberlin College from 2001 to 2005. Prior to heading to Grand Valley State he coached here on the North Shore with the Illinois Rising Stars AAU program.

Laird Walker will make his return to the Forester bench, this time as a coach. Walker donned the red and black from 2004-2008 and was a 2 time Second Team All-Midwest Conference selection. Coach Walker is originally from Chicago and attended Whitney Young High School before joining the Foresters.

All three coaches are excited to get the new school year and season started and are ready to build on the success the that the Foresters were able to accomplish last year!

'10 Lake Forest Shooting Camp Concludes

The past two days were nothing short of amazing as the coaching staff and a few of our incoming players held the first summer boy's basketball camp in the new recreation facility. In total we had 46 players attend our two-day shooting camp that went from 9am-3pm each day.

Campers were grouped according to their age group and learned the correct form, footwork, catch phrases, and the physical and mental techniques that all great shooters possess. Campers also participated in various drills and shooting contests throughout both days. Every camper had their shot videotaped and analyzed by the Lake Forest coaching staff and were sent home with a dvd of their shot as well as a personal evaluation breaking down their shot in pieces. Overall the campers showed great energy and enthusiasm throughout the two days and we look forward to that carrying over to our ballhandling camp beginning tomorrow.

There is still room to sign-up for the Advanced Instruction Overnight/Commuter Camp July 12-15 and the Offensive Improvement Day Camp August 2-5. Men's Basketball Alumni Day 2010

The single greatest joy of coaching at Lake Forest College has been our alumni. There were a lot of reasons I originally went into coaching, however, building a family of alumni was not on my radar. I feel so fortunate to have found a place where the alumni are as great as they are at Lake Forest College. Over the weekend we had over forty of our former players and their families turn out for a tremendous day. It started with some golf at Lake Bluff Golf Course where the predicted all day rain stopped for a perfectly timed six hour break.

Following the golf we headed back to campus for a tour of the new sports center addition. It was great to see everyone’s faces as we went on the tour. As many of them said the pictures just don’t do the facility justice. The tour ended in the new field house and it was time for the alumni basketball game. Team Illinois defeated Team non-Illinois after pulling away down the stretch. Team non-Illinois says that just means they had more fun on the golf course. I am confident there will be a hotly contested rematch at next year’s alumni day.

The reception/dinner that followed was the highlight of the day. We recognized Mike Ansani’s induction to the Lake Forest athletic hall of fame and also the tenth anniversary of the 2000 conference championship team. Every member of the 2000 championship team was able to attend the event. The stories that followed were very amusing and like a fine wine get better with age. The reception was wrapped up with a Mike Maloney vs Matt Bookter three point shooting contest. Can't wait for next year's alumni day, it is one of the highlights of the year.

Foresters Reach Out to North Chicago School

On April 22nd, the Lake Forest College men's basketball team set out to AJ Katzenmaier School in North Chicago to assist in their after school program. The afternoon was spent interacting with the children by stressing the importance of incorporating excercise into their everyday lifes.

The children participated in a variety of basketball drills including dribble relays and shooting demonstrations in addition to going through some of the same plyometric workout routines that the men's basketball team uses to build agility and foot quickness.

Reaching out to the local community and giving back to our supporters is an important part of becoming a Forester student-athlete. Opportunities like this build chemistry amongst the team in addition to communication and teamwork. Most importantly, on this day it put a smile on every childs face!

Foresters Participate in Relay For Life

On Friday, April 16th, the students of Lake Forest organized and conducted their annual Relay for Life night. Relay for Life is an all night event beginning at 6:00pm in the evening and concluding at 6:00am in the morning. During the night student organizations, faculty groups and athletic teams must always have at least one member of their team walking around the perimeter of the hockey rink. This continues in a relay type fashion for twelve hours.

The event increases awareness of cancer and also raises money for the American Cancer Society. The men's basketball team was out in full force and helped to contribute to the record breaking total of over $50,000 raised. This amount places Lake Forest College in the top 15 of all colleges and universities throughout the country.

Our participation in this event is just one of many ways we reach out to local organizations and to the community by taking time out of our daily schedules to help promote a good cause. Forester men's basketball player, Jaron Eanes (pictured above), was one of many students who assisted in organizing the event.

The Lake Forest boy's basketball camp dates for this summer were recently announced by camp director, Chris Conger.

All camps will be held at the Sports Center on the campus of Lake Forest College. The college is set to open a $17-million dollar addition to the Sports Center, in April 2010, featuring a new gymnasium with air conditioning. The following camps will be held this summer:

Clark Named To All-Midwest Region Team

Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) was recently named Second Team All-Midwest Region. Clark led the conference and set a school record with a .686 field goal percentage and his 12 double-doubles tied for league-high honors. He also ranked second in the MWC in rebounding (9.0 rpg.), third in blocks per game (32 in 24 contests), and fifth with 17.6 points per contest.

The Midwest Conference released the 2009-10 All-MWC basketball teams and Lake Forest College had two players among the 16 honored.

Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) was the first Forester since 2001 to be named First Team All-MWC. He was an Honorable Mention selection last season. Clark led the conference and set a school record with a .686 field goal percentage and his 12 double-doubles tied for league-high honors. He also ranked second in the MWC in rebounding (9.0 rpg.), third in blocks per game (32 in 24 contests), and fifth with 17.6 points per contest. Clark led the Foresters in all the categories listed above and was second in assists and tied-for-second in steals.

Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) earned Honorable Mention All-MWC recognition after setting a team record with 140 assists on the season, the second-highest total in the conference. He also led the squad with 24 steals and ranked second in rebounding (6.3 rpg.) and fifth in scoring (7.2 ppg.). He dished out eight assists in the team's MWC Tournament game to become the program's all-time leader with 342 in his career.

The Foresters finished the season with an overall record of 14-10 and their 12-4 mark in conference play was second in the standings.

The All-MWC teams are selected by the league's head coaches. Five players were listed on the First Team and six on the Second Team. Five more earned Honorable Mention recognition. Four seniors, seven juniors, and five sophomores appeared on the lists.

Sports Center Addition Opening Set For April 8th

Construction for the facility continues to be on time and the Forester students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to work out in the new facility this spring. Although there will still be some finishing details (signage, furniture, etc.) and remaining work to be done to the cafe over the summer, the main programming features of the building including: the recreational track, weight and cardio spaces, multi-purpose courts, aerobic/dance studio, batting/golf cage, and locker rooms will all be ready for use.

Foresters Fall In MWC Semifinals

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 85-81 by Carroll University Friday afternoon (February 26) in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament. The Foresters finish the season with a 14-10 overall record while the 16-8 Pioneers advance to the Saturday's final against either Ripon College or league champion and tournament host St. Norbert College.

Senior guard Victor Campbell (bottom picture) led Lake Forest with 20 points in his final collegiate game. Sophomore forward Nate Bateman and post player Travis Clark were next with 16 apiece and freshman guard Jeff Beck added 14. Clark pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added four assists and a pair of blocked shots.

Senior forward Patrick Hanley (top picture) led all players in the contest with eight assists and became the program's all-time leader with 342 in his career.

The Foresters shot 51.5 percent from the field but just 7-for-25 from three-point range and 6-for-13 from the free throw line. Carroll connected on 55.8 percent of its field goal attempts and 15 of 18 foul shots. Lake Forest had a 34-29 edge in rebounds while the Pioneers committed just five of the game's 14 turnovers.

Lake Forest led by as many as eight points during an opening period that included 10 lead changes, the last on a basket by Campbell in the closing seconds, giving the Foresters a 36-35 halftime advantage.

The lead changed hands seven more times in the first four minutes of the second half. Carroll took the lead for good on a basket with 15:53 remaining and an 8-0 run by the Pioneers later in the period gave them a game-high 11-point advantage (64-53) with nine-and-a-half minutes to play. Lake Forest cut the deficit to three points but it was back up to 10 with a minute on the clock. Baskets by Hanley, Bateman, and Clark closed the gap to four with 27 second left. Bateman followed up a Carroll foul shot with a layup and two more Pioneer free throws with a three-pointer with 13 seconds to play and the Foresters trailing by just two. After a pair of timeouts, Carroll was able to inbound the ball for a break-away layup to put the game away.

In addition to Hanley's career mark for assists, he raised his single-season record to 140. Clark's .686 field goal percentage on the year is the highest in program history and his 32 blocked shots rank third. Campbell finished his career fifth in team annals with 124 three-pointers.

Hanley, Campbell, and fellow senior Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/ Lake Forest Academy) are the only three players the team will lose to graduation in May.

Foresters Capture Eighth Straight Victory

The Forester men's basketball team hosted and defeated Illinois College 88-74 on Saturday (February 20) to finish the regular season with a 14-9 overall record and 12-4 mark in Midwest Conference play. It was Lake Forest's eighth consecutive victory, the team's longest winning streak closing out 1999-2000 with 11 in a row. The Blueboys fell to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the league.

Sophomore post player Travis Clark became the fourth player in Lake Forest College history to make as many as 12 field goals in a

game without a miss. He led all scorers with 25 points in just 24 minutes and added seven rebounds and three assists.

Freshman guard Jeff Beck (Top Picture) was next on the squad with 17points and he chipped in with six rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Bottom Picture) and sophomore forward Nate Bateman added 14 points apiece and combined with Beck to shoot 9-for-17 from three-point range. Bateman also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists.

The program's career assist record is in jeopardy as senior forward Patrick Hanley added to his single-season record total with seven more on Saturday. He now has 132 assists this year and 334 in his career, three off the mark set by Lee Taylor in 2003. Hanley also pulled down seven rebounds, recorded four steals, and blocked a pair of shots in the game.

Lake Forest shot 63.3 percent from the field in the first half and 55.9 percent in the game. The Foresters reached double figures in three-pointers made (10) for the third time in the last six games. The home team out-rebounded Illinois College 44-25 to increase its rebound margin on the season to +10.3 per game, which ranks among the top five marks in the nation.

The game was close before a 13-4 Forester run late in the opening period gave the home team a 44-34 advantage. The Blueboys pulled to within five points before Clark closed out the half with back-to-back baskets, making the score 48-39 in favor of Lake Forest.

Another basket by Clark and a pair of three-pointer by Beck to start the second half extended the margin to 17 points and the Foresters led by at least 11 the rest of the way.

Hanley, Campbell, and fellow senior Jaron Eanes were honored before the final home game of their careers.

Lake Forest had already clinched the #2 seed in next weekend's (February 26-27) MWC Tournament, which will be hosted by league champion St. Norbert College. The Foresters will take on Carroll University in Friday's first semifinal at 1:30 p.m. A live video webcast of the game will be available at pennatlantic.com. As we get set to close out the regular season, it's important we remember where we once were and the process it took to get us to where we are today.

The award is named after the Forester women's hockey player who lost her battle with cancer late this past summer.

The Forester men's basketball team won 71-63 at Knox College on Saturday (February 13) to clinch a spot in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament at St. Norbert College in two weekends. Lake Forest is now 12-9 overall on the season and tied for second in the league standings with a 10-4 mark in conference play. The Foresters have now won six straight and ten of eleven games overall.

Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored a game-high 24 points and led the Foresters with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and both players knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) pulled down five rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists.

The Foresters shot 54.8 percent from the field and made 20 of 27 free throws in the game. Lake Forest held Knox 43.6 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded the home team 32-22.

The game was tied at 12 when the Foresters began a 20-2 run that put the visitors ahead by a game-high 18 points with 4:40 to play in the first half. The Prairie Fire closed out the period on a 10-2 run and trailed 44-34 at halftime.

Knox gradually chipped away at the deficit and trimmed the margin to a single point (59-58) with 3:42 to play. A basket by Forester senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) put the visitors back ahead by three and he made four of the team's 10 free throws in the game's final 67 seconds as Lake Forest secured the victory.

The Foresters will play at Monmouth College Tuesday night (February 16) at 7:30 before closing out the regular season at home against Illinois College on Saturday (February 20). Live video webcasts of both games will be available at pennatlantic.com.

The Forester Way

Coming off two conference road wins last week at Carroll University and St. Norbert College, the team returned to practice on Monday in business-like fashion with a continued sense of urgency and drive that has carried us to nine wins in our last ten games overall.

For some odd reason, the success we've experienced as a team over the past month reminds me of the old Lay's potato chip commercials stating, "No One Can Eat Just One." I firmly believe our success is largely attributed to the fact that these men are not just hungry for one win, instead they're hungry for more and with that comes trust and confidence.

As coaches, we analyze the student-athletes on our basketball team everday. We keep tabs on how things are going for each of our players in the classroom, how they present themselves on the court through their actions, and listen to any feedback or suggestions they offer us as a coaching staff.

If all Forester fans had the luxury I have of standing in our locker room at the conclusion of each of our games in the past month, one would see the determination and hunger in the eyes of each of these young men to become successful. It gives me goose bumps to stand there and see it, but to know you have a group of young men huddled up in front of you experiencing it and wanting more, makes it that much more enjoyable!

These men are determined to build on the success they established in January and make February a month to remember for all of us. We thank you for your continued support throughout the season and beyond!

Patrick Hanley Scores 30, Sets Season Assists Record in Victory at #9 St. Norbert

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team won 66-59 at St. Norbert College, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, on Saturday (February 6). The Foresters have now won five games in a row and nine of their last 10. The team raised its overall record to 11-9 and Midwest Conference mark to 9-4. The Green Knights fell to 18-2 overall and 12-1 in league play.

Lake Forest senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) led all players in the game with a career-high 30 points. He shot 9-for-13 from the field, 6-for-9 from three-point range, and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. He also pulled down five rebounds and his two assists gave him 115 on the season, surpassing the previous program record of 114 set by Danny Nikitas in 1978-79.

Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) and freshman guad Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Clark also led the Foresters with seven rebounds, senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) dished out a team-high three assists, and sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) recorded a pair of steals.

Lake Forest shot just 38.9 percent from the field but held St. Norbert to 37.3 percent. The visitors knocked down just seven of 23 three-point field goal attempts but connected on 17 of 21 free throws. The Foresters were out-rebounded (37-34) for just the fourth time this season but committed just nine turnovers, two more than the home team.

The Foresters led by as many as five points and the Green Knights by as many as three in a closely-contested first half. A three-pointer by Hanley in the final minute of the period tied the score at 21 and it remained there until halftime.

Hanley started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers, kicking off a 12-2 Forester run. St. Norbert responded with a 16-5 run to take a one-point lead (39-38) with 9:20 to play. Hanley then knocked down another three-pointer and added three free throws after being fouled attempting another long-range jumper. After the Green Knights tied the game at 48 with 4:16 remaining, Campbell completed a traditional three-point play and Hanley connected again from beyond the arc to put the Foresters ahead by six. St. Norbert closed to within two points but got no closer as Clark, Hanley, and Beck made seven of eight foul shots in the final 62 seconds of the contest.

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team won 78-66 at Carroll University Friday night (February 5). The Foresters have won eight of their last nine games and are now 10-9 overall this season and 8-4 in league play. The Pioneers fell to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the league.

Four Lake Forest players reached double figures in scoring, led by senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) and sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) with 14 apiece. Clark also pulled down 10 rebounds for his league-high 11th double-double of the season. Lake Forest opened the second half on a 17-6 run and kept a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The margin reached a game-high 18 points (67-49) after a Clark layup with 7:09 to play in the contest.

Foresters Gear Up for Wisconsin Road Swing

The Forester men's basketball team routed visiting Monmouth College 80-53 Tuesday night (February 2). It was Lake Forest's third straight victory (7th in their last 8 games) and it evened the team's overall record to 9-9 and lifted its Midwest Conference mark to 7-4. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) led the Foresters with 16 points. He shot 4-for-7 from three-point range and added four assists. Sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and freshman guard Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. All of Roets' points came on 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range and both players added three assists. Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) shot 4-for-6 from the field but, with eight points, failed to reach double figures for the first time this season. He pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, despite playing just 18 minutes due to the lopsided score. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) dished out a game-high five assists and is now just five assists shy of matching the single-season school record in that category (114).

The Foresters shot 50.8 percent from the field and made a season-high 12 three-pointers in 23 attempts (52.2%). The home team held Monmouth to 35.2 percent shooting from the floor and out-rebounded the visitors 45-24.

Lake Forest broke an early 5-5 tie with a 12-2 run and led for the rest of the game. A 13-0 run by the home team late in the half extended the margin to 18 points and, after a basket by both teams, the Foresters led 45-27 at halftime.

A 15-4 Lake Forest run to open the second half put the game out of reach. The lead reached as many as 34 points late in the contest.

The Foresters have outscored their last two opponents by a combined 60 points, the program's highest scoring margin in a two-game span since Lake Forest won by 62 and nine in back-to-back games in February of 1977.

Lake Forest will travel to Carroll University Friday night (February 5) at 7:30 and play at St. Norbert College, the nation's ninth-ranked team, at 4:00 the following afternoon. Foresters Shut Down Nation's Top Offense

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team climbed to third place in the Midwest Conference standings with a 89-56 victory over visiting Grinnell College on Saturday (January 30). Grinnell entered the contest with the nation's top scoring offense in Division 3 basketball, averaging 92.5 ppg.

Lake Forest scored the game's first six points and never relinquished the lead. Forester runs of 8-0 and 12-0 helped extend the margin to as many as 21 points in the first half, which ended with the home team leading 53-33. The Lake Forest lead grew to a game-high 39 points following a six-minute span of holding Grinnell scoreless midway through the second half.

After setting a career-high with 15 rebounds at Grinnell on January 5, Lake Forest senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) pulled down 16 boards against the Pioneers on Saturday. He also dished out 15 assists, the second-highest total in team history.

The Foresters are now 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the MWC after winning six of their last seven league games. The Pioneers fell to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

The Forester men's basketball team prevailed 79-67 at Illinois College Wednesday night. Both teams are now 5-4 in Midwest Conference play. Lake Forest raised its overall record to 7-9 while the Blueboys fell to 9-7. The Foresters have now won five of their last six games overall.

Forester sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) led all players in the game with a career-high 30 points. He shot 10-for-17 from the field and knocked down half of his eight attempts from three-point range and six of seven free throws. Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) and sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Clark added a game-high 10 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double and 10th this season. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) added five points, nine rebounds, and a game-high seven assists.

Lake Forest shot 47.5 percent from the field while limiting Illinois College to just 34.9 percent. The Foresters held a commanding 46-29 edge in rebounds but committed 16 of the game's 25 turnovers.

The Blueboys took their only lead of the game (11-10) with 14-plus minutes to play in the first half. The Foresters responded with a 20-5 run during which Bateman scored eight points and six other players on the team had at least two.

Lake Forest led 36-23 at halftime and by as many as 22 points in the second period. The Blueboys could get no closer than 15 points until the final minute of the contest.

Men's Basketball Staff to Wear Sneakers with Suits

You may wonder why the Foresters men's basketball staff will be wearing sneakers along with their suits for this Saturdays (January 30) home contest vs. Grinnell College.

The idea is to help raise awareness amongst basketball fans about the fight against cancer and how important nutrition and physical activity plays in reducing people’s risk of the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately one-third of cancer deaths could be prevented with proper diet and exercise.

Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $45 million since 1993 to help the Cancer Society finance groundbreaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information and education, advocate for public health policies that benefit communities, and deliver services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

All fans are encouraged to participate in this event and help in the men's basketball teams effort to increase cancer awareness by wearing sneakers to Saturdays contest. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm.

Foresters Come From Behind to Beat Ripon

The Forester men's basketball team hosted and defeated Ripon College 76-70 Friday night (January 22). The victory raised Lake Forest's overall record to 6-8 and Midwest Conference mark to 4-3. The Red Hawks fell to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Forester sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led all players in the game with 28 points and 13 rebounds. He shot 11-for-19 from the field, made each of his six free throws, and added three assists and a pair of steals in his eighth double-double of the season. Senior guard Victor Campbell Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was the only other Lake Forest player in double figures with 10 points. Freshman guard Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) scored five points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) also scored five points and dished out a team-high seven assists.

Lake Forest shot 47.4 percent from the field and knocked down 17 of 23 free throws in the contest. The Foresters out-rebounded the visitors 37-34 but committed 17 turnovers while forcing just a dozen Red Hawk miscues.

Ripon led by as many as 13 points in the first half but a 12-2 Forester run late in the period cut the deficit to just two points and the margin was five (44-39) at halftime.

The Foresters fell behind by seven points with 12:47 to play in the game but responded with a 12-2 run that gave them a 59-56 lead with nine minutes left. The score was tied three times down the stretch, the last at 70 with 1:43 on the clock. Clark put the home team ahead for good on a traditional three-point play with 42 seconds remaining and his rebound and free throws with seven seconds to play helped put the game away.

The Foresters will host Beloit College at 5:00 tomorrow evening. A live video webcast, a live radio broadcast, and live stats will be available on the Lake Forest College Athletics Web site during the game.

"White Out The Forest"

On Friday, January 22nd the Forester men's basketball team will continue Midwest Conference action at home vs. Ripon College. The Foresters enter the contest having won three straight and are looking to add to their streak against the Red Hawks who have also won three consecutive games and currently sit two games ahead of the Foresters in second place of the MWC standings.

With that said, all fans are encouraged to dress in as much WHITE as possible as we look to "White Out The Forest" on Friday night. Men's tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm, however you may want to arrive early and catch the Forester women in action as they host Ripon at 5:00 pm. Both womens teams sit in a tie at 6-0 on top of the MWC standings.

It's important we make "The Forest" the toughest place to play in the MWC and it begins with your support! Best of luck to both the Forester men and women this weekend!

Travis Clark Named MWC Performer of the Week

Clark helped lead Lake Forest to a pair of MWC road wins over the weekend. He led all players in Friday’s 77-56 victory at Beloit with 19 points and his eight rebounds and four assists also tied for game-high honors. On Saturday the Foresters prevailed 60-57 in overtime at Lawrence and Clark scored a game-high 23 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and blocked a pair of shots. His free throws with two seconds remaining helped clinch the victory. He averaged 21 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3 assists, a blocked shot, and a steal per game. He shot 57 percent from the field and committed just one turnover on the weekend.

Overtime Victory at Lawrence is Foresters' Third Consecutive Triumph

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team edged out host Lawrence University 60-57 in overtime on Saturday. The win raised the Foresters' overall record to 5-8 and evened their Midwest Conference mark at 3-3. The Vikings fell to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Lake Forest sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and his sixth in the last eight games. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was the only other Forester in double figures with 12 points and sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) matched Clark's team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) led the squad with three assists and two steals.

Both teams struggled from the field with the Foresters shooting 38.5 percent and the Vikings just 31.6. Lake Forest also made just one of a dozen attempts from three-point range and nine of 16 free throws. Lake Forest out-rebounded the home team 48-39 after trailing 17-14 in that category at halftime.

The Foresters led for most of the first half but by no more than six points. The period ended the the visitors ahead 32-31.

The second half was also close throughout and included six ties and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points. Clark tied the score at 53 on a tip-in with 56 seconds remaining in regulation and, after a basket by the Vikings with 41 ticks left, a Campbell layup tied it again with eight seconds to play. Lawrence's shot at the buzzer was unsuccessful and a Forester game reached overtime for the third time this season.

Bateman started the scoring in overtime by making one of two free throws. The Vikings regained the advantage with two free throws of their own before Campbell tied it by also making one of two from the line with 3:48 on the clock. Campbell was successful on one of two foul shots again with 2:46 to play and neither team scored again until Clark knocked down both shots from the line with two seconds to play.

The Foresters will host a pair of league games next weekend (January 22-23). The team will take on Ripon College at 7:00 Friday night and Beloit College at 5:00 Saturday evening.

Lake Forest Cruises to Victory at Beloit

The Forester men's basketball team routed Beloit College 77-56 on the road Friday night. Lake Forest is now 4-8 overall this season and 2-3 in Midwest Conference play. The Buccaneers fell to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Forester sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led all players in the game with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds and four assists. With 10 points, freshman guard Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) was the only other player in the contest to reach double figures in scoring. Sophomore post player Dayton Young (Muskego, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) each scored nine points and Young matched Clark's eight rebounds. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) was the other Forester with four assists.

Lake Forest shot 57.7 percent from the floor while the Bucs made just 38 percent of their field goal attempts. The Foresters also had a 37-26 edge in rebounds.

The Foresters led for nearly all of the game and used a 12-1 first half run to extend the advantage to double figures, where it remained the rest of the contest. Lake Forest led 40-23 at halftime and by as many at 28 (72-44) late in the game.

Lake Forest will travel to Lawrence University for tomorrow afternoon's 4:00 tip-off.

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team hosted and defeated Knox College 69-53 on Saturday. The Foresters are now 3-8 overall and 1-3 in Midwest Conference games. The Prairie Fire fell to 1-9 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Lake Forest sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) scored a season-high 20 points in the contest. He shot 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was next on the team with 13 points and sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) also reached double figures with 10. Clark also recorded three steals and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the last six games. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) added nine rebounds and led all players in the game with six assists and four steals.

An 18-6 Forester run in the first half gave the home team a 26-16 lead late in the first half. After Knox trimmed the margin to seven, three-pointers by sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Bateman in the final minute made the score 32-19 at halftime.

The Prairie Fire chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 46 with 7:35 remaining in the contest. A pair of free throws by Clark put the Foresters back on top and started a 10-0 run. After a basket by Knox trimmed the margin to eight, Lake Forest scored six more points and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

The Foresters will be back on the road next weekend (January 15-16). The team will play at Beloit College Friday night at 7:30 and at Lawrence University the following afternoon at 4:00. Live video webcasts of both games will be available at pennatlantic.com.

Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Lake Forest College among list of schools to join Big Ten Conference

Imagine this time next year the Foresters men's basketball team taking part in a pregame walk-thru at the Kohl Center for their Big Ten Conference opener vs. the University of Wisconsin Badgers. Now wake up and come back to reality!

Apparently one Ohio newspaper doesn't see this idea as being to far-fetched. It seems to be a yearly debate whether the Big Ten Conference should or would even consider expanding and adding a 12th school. One sports writer recently released his list of ten unusual suspects to join the Big Ten Conference. You may also find an interesting Forester fact after reading his article below.

Foresters Defeat St. Mary's University on Last-Second Shot in Overtime

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team defeated visiting St. Mary's University 87-85 in overtime on Sunday (November 29). The Foresters raised their record on the season to 2-3 and the Cardinals fell to 2-2.

Lake Forest senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) made four of five three-pointers in the game and led the home team with 20 points. Sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) were next on the squad with 15 points apiece. Bateman also pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Clark added seven rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) finished with nine points, five rebounds, two steals, and a game-high seven assists.

Neither team led by more than five points during a first half that included seven lead changes and four ties, including a 33-33 score when the buzzer sounded.

An 11-1 Cardinal run early in the second half gave the visitors a 49-41 lead with 12:37 to play in regulation. A 10-2 run by the Foresters a few minutes later tied the game at 53 with 7:32 remaining. St. Mary's pulled ahead by six before back-to-back three-pointers by Campbell knotted the score at 61 with 4:24 on the clock. Campbell also tied the game on a traditional three-point play with 1:03 left and again on a pair of free throws with just nine ticks remaining to force overtime.

Lake Forest pulled ahead by as many as six in overtime but 4-for-10 shooting from the free throw line in the extra period allowed St. Mary's to come back. A Cardinal three-pointer with 2.9 seconds to play tied the game at 85. The Foresters' long inbound pass was deflected out of bounds, giving the home team the ball on their baseline with 2.3 seconds left. Hanley was then able to find sophomore post player Dayton Young (Muskego, Wis./Catholic Memorial) under the basket and he made the game-winner with 0.6 seconds on the clock.

Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play next weekend (December 4-5). The Forester will host St. Norbert College at 7:00 Friday night and Carroll University the following afternoon at 4:00. Foresters drop heartbreaker at Chicago

The Forester men's basketball team fell 61-60 at the University of Chicago Tuesday night (November 24). Lake Forest is now 1-3 on the season while the Maroons remain unbeaten after three contests.

Forester sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored a game-high 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. He also pulled down six rebounds. Freshman guard Jeff Beck (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) was next on the team with a career-high 14 points and shot 6-for-8 from the floor. Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) recorded his first double-double of the year, scoring 11 points and dishing out a career-high 11 assists. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) led the visitors with seven rebounds.

Lake Forest shot exactly 50 percent from the field while limiting Chicago to 39.3. The Maroons made a dozen three-pointers in 31 attempts while the Foresters connected on four of 10 from beyond the arc. Lake Forest was 12-for-17 and Chicago 5-for-7 from the foul line. The visitors held a 29-25 edge in rebounds but committed 14 turnovers while forcing just 10 Maroon miscues.

The Foresters scored the game's first six points and led by six on four different occasions during the first half. Chicago briefly took the lead three times in the period, including a 30-28 advantage when it ended.

Lake Forest also netted the first six points after halftime and outscored the home team 21-7 during the first 11-plus minutes of the period. The Foresters led 52-40 aftre a Hanley three-pointer with 7:46 to play but Chicago went on an 18-6 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes to tie the score at 58. Clark regained the lead for Lake Forest on a layup with 1:40 left on the clock. The Maroons knocked down a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining and blocked a shot with less than five ticks left to preserve the victory.

The Foresters will host St. Mary's University on Sunday (November 29) at 3:00 p.m.

Foresters Defeated by the Hosts at Calvin Tip-Off Tournament

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 85-78 at Calvin College in the consolation game of Calvin's Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday (November 21). The Foresters fell to 1-2 on the season while the Knights evened their record at 1-1.

Sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led the visitors with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He shot 7-for-11 from the field and added a pair of steals. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored a season-high 14 points and had three assists and three steals in the game. Sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) also reached double figures with 13 points and shot 3-for-5 from three-point range.

The Foresters shot 51.8 percent from the field as a team and knocked down six of 19 three-pointers and 14 of 22 free throws. Calvin made exactly half of their field goal attempts, including 11 of 19 from beyond the arc, and 10 of 34 free throws. The Knights out-rebounded Lake Forest 35-30 and both teams committed 13 turnovers.

Calvin scored the game's first eight points and the Foresters rattled off the next nine for the first of 14 first half lead changes. Lake Forest led by as many as five points and Calvin by nine in the period, which ended with the home team ahead 49-44.

The margin reached nine points again early in the second half before a 13-2 Forester run put the visitors ahead 65-63 with nine minutes to play. A Calvin three-pointer with less than six minutes left on the clock gave the home team the lead for good and the Knights stretched the margin to nine points again and made seven free throws in the final 66 seconds to secure the victory.

Lake Forest Falls to Davenport in Calvin Tip-Off Tourney Semifinals

The Forester men's basketball team fell to 1-1 on the year after falling 88-73 to Davenport University in the semifinals of the Calvin College Tip-Off Tournament Friday night (November 20). The Panthers raised their record to 5-0.
Senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) led three Foresters in double figures with 16 points. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists. Sophomore guard Chris Roets (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) added a career-high 14 points and sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) chipped in with 10. They also led the team with three steals and seven rebounds, respectively.

Davenport out-shot Lake Forest 53.5 percent to 51.0 percent. The Foresters made six of 16 three-pointers and shot 17-for-29 (58.6%) from the free throw line. The Panthers knocked down just three of 14 attempts from three-point range and 21 of 30 (70%) foul shots. Lake Forest held a 31-26 edge in rebounds but committed 26 turnovers while forcing just 15.

Davenport jumped out to a 15-4 lead early in the contest but the Foresters came back to tie the game at 27. The teams were deadlocked again at 30, 32, and 33 before the Panthers pulled away at the end of the period and led 38-34 at halftime.

The Foresters surrendered the first three points of the second half and got no closer than five points down the rest of the way. The margin reached double figures several times in the period and remained there for the final six-plus minutes of the contest.

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team kicked off the 2009-10 season with a 77-62 win over Lakeland College on Sunday.

Four Foresters scored at least a dozen points, led by sophomore post player Travis Clark (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) with 16. He shot 8-for-12 from the field and added four rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior guard Victor Campbell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and sophomore forward Nate Bateman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) were next on the team with 13 points apiece. They combined to make seven of 14 attempts from three-point range and Bateman finished with four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore post player Dayton Young (Muskego, Wis./Catholic Memorial) shot 6-for-7 from the floor and scored 12 points.

Sophomore forward Drew Grennell (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) led all players in the contest with a career-high nine rebounds and senior forward Patrick Hanley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) dished out a game-high five assists.

Lake Forest shot 54.2 percent from the field while holding Lakeland to 38.2 percent shooting. The Foresters also knocked down eight of 22 three-pointers but just five of 12 free throws. The team dished out 19 assists, however they were forced into committing 20 turnovers. Lake Forest out-rebounded their guests 38-30. On the other hand, the Muskies shot 8-for-23 from beyond the arc and 12-for-20 from the line but did manage to commit 16 turnovers in the loss.

An 11-point run early in the game gave the Foresters a lead (13-6) they would never relinquish. Lakeland trimmed the margin to three points at 14-11 and again at 26-23 but got no closer. The home team scored the final five points of the opening period and led 38-29 at halftime. Lake Forest also scored the first 14 points of the second half to take a 52-29 advantage. The lead reached as many as 25 points (77-52) before the Muskies scored the game's final 10 points.

The Foresters will travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 20th & 21st, for the Calvin College Tip-Off Tournament. Lake Forest will take on Davenport University (Mich.) in Friday's 5:30 p.m. (EST) semifinal. The winner will play in the Saturday's 3:00 p.m. (EST) championship game while the loser will play in the consolation game at 1:00 (EST).

A True Freshman - Jeff Beck

Life as a freshman at Lake Forest College is quite different than I thought it would be. When I first came to LFC, I expected everything to be as easy as it was in high school, but have since found that I enjoy the new challenges I face day in and day out on the court and in the classroom. The professors at LFC are second to none and I have instilled my trust in their teachings to help me progress through college as a student-athlete.

As far as my social life here at LFC, I have made a new group of friends whom I enjoy spending time with. It was helpful knowing a few people, including my teammate and roommate Chris Madson to ease the transition to college. Knowing these people also introduced me to other networks of friends throughout campus.

Lastly, being on court has been a great experience so far. It has been much different from high school, but in a good way. The pace of the game is a lot different from high school, but I find that it makes the game much more intense. Also, something special to my college basketball experience is the level of competition that we have on our team. In high school there was generally 8-10 guys who would really work hard and make people better. Here we have so many guys who are all working hard and competing for positions everyday. It makes it tough, but really brings your game to another level in which you may never have thought was possible.

The first game has come quicker than I could have imagined, but I'm very excited and cannot wait till tomorrow to show our fans what we have been working so hard on all offseason as well as the first month of practice. The anticipation and excitement amongst students and staff for November 15th has been building, now it's time to show our fans what Forester Basketball is all about!

Fall Sports Wrap Up

Congratulations to the Forester men's and women's soccer programs as well as the volleyball team for wrapping up their 2009 regular season schedules with a victory this past weekend.

The volleyball team posted victories over Wisconsin Lutheran College and Lawrence University on Saturday. Although the victory over Lawrence forced the Foresters into a three-way tie for third place, the team lost the tie-breaker to qualify for the four team Midwest Conference Volleyball Tournament.

Both soccer programs were able to shutout Monmouth College on Sunday. The women will continue their season this week in the MWC Women's Soccer Tournament as they prepare to face the Knights of St. Norbert College on Friday.

Finally, the women's tennis team concluded a successful 2009 campaign with a fourth place finish in the MWC tournament two weeks ago. Freshmen Melika Celebic captured the #1 singles title, a first for the Foresters in twenty years. Junior Lauren Stroner captured a #5 singles championship as well.

Good luck to women's soccer on Friday and to the football team on Saturday. Remember to mark your calendars for the Forester men's basketball home opener on November 15th at 3:00pm!

Apparently my first post got great reviews, so I'm writing a second one! As I write this I am preparing to head over to the gym and get some shots up. Practice is in full swing now and the team has really been working hard. The college is just coming back from fall break, a few days off from classes to get everyone ready to finish the semester strong. We took full advantage of this time away from the classroom in a few different ways.

With practice underway we spent these days really focusing in on what the coaching staff had on the practice agenda. I hold everyone, including myself, to a very high standard, but so far the first week of practice has met those expectations. The key to this has been competition. There is a different feel in the air during practice than in years past, so much more hunger and drive from every player. This will only help in our long-term development.

Secondly, fall break enabled us to spend our time away from the gym getting ahead with our studies. By far one of the hardest things about being a student-athlete is balancing classes with basketball. It is one thing in the off-season, but when the basketball commitment is ratcheted up during the actual season, it is important to take advantage of every opportunity of free time given. Time management, communication, and organizational skills are three great qualities a student-athlete must possess at this level.

We spent the final day of break building team chemistry with our version of "OTA's" (organized team activities) that took place outside of practice. We split into 3 groups and were given a video camera along with three tasks: filming a commercial, reenacting a famous sports scene, and reenacting a cartoon of some type. The creativity on this team is really unmatched! Geico was a popular commercial spoof, with both the Caveman and the money with eyes spots chosen among others. Hopefully we can get one or two of these scenes on the blog.

Looking forward to this weekend when the Monmouth football team comes to Farwell Field. Monmouth is ranked #10 in the nation. Really excited to see the Forester’s pull off the upset. If we can get off to a good start, I like our chances. Til next time, from "The Forest!"

Men's Basketball 3-0 in "Cheer Off"

There was plenty at stake for the Lake Forest College Men's Basketball team at the 2009 homecoming pep rally. The team had their sights set on capturing their third straight homecoming "cheer off" title since its inception three years ago. Needless to say, the team didn't disappoint, and fought off a great showing by a number of different student groups to capture their first championship of the 2009 school year.

With practice underway, the team is focused and determined to accept the next challenge and continue working towards a Midwest Conference Championship.

Love of the Game

We are very lucky to be able to coach college basketball. As a coach, every day we spend in the gym is a great day, but today was special. We entered the gym at 5:30am for an early morning shuttle test (I know all you alums wished you could have been there), then spent the rest of the morning and afternoon in the basketball offices, and finished our day with practice from 7:30-10:00pm.

It was a great first day of practice for the Forester Men’s Basketball program. The shuttle test had a few pleasant surprises and others have some work to do, but I know we will get there as a group. Practice had great energy and a competitive spirit. We have talked so much with this group about the importance of competing in everything we do. I hope they realize we have to have this attitude everyday. If we do, the sky is our limit!

One Shining Moment

With practice set to begin in two days for our Men's Basketball program it's only fitting we reflect back on how the 2008-2009 College Basketball season ended last April. Watching the replay of "One Shining Moment" makes the staff and players that much more excited for the 2009-10 college basketball season to get underway. It gives me goose bumps thinking about our own one shining moment, what would yours be?

Mike Ansani ’98 – To be inducted to the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame

We are so very proud to have one of our own inducted to the Lake Forest Athletic Hall of Fame this year. Our Hall of Fame induction is done annually during the morning of Homecoming. With the requirement of having to be 10 years removed from Lake Forest College prior to induction, Mike is the first basketball player inducted that I had an opportunity to coach. While we take great pride in all of the basketball players in the hall of fame it is a little more special for me when I actually was able to work with Michael during his time here at the Forest.

Mike is a tremendous example of what we expect from all of our guys; Excellence on the court and excellence in the classroom. After graduation Mike went on to become a physician and is now working at a hospital in Wisconsin. To see Mike’s Hall of Fame induction Bio please CLICK HERE.

2008-09 Men's Basketball Subway Skit

During the 2008-09 season, the men's basketball team was subdivided into separate groups with each group given the task to be creative and have fun while developing a group skit. Each separate skit had to incorporate either a scene from a music video, movie, or a commercial. This was a great way to get our guys out of the gym and still develop teamwork, build chemistry, and have fun being a Forester!

Hi, my name is Patrick Hanley and I am a senior at Lake Forest College. I am double majoring in History and Education. My ultimate goal is to become a high school social studies teacher and coach basketball. I will be blogging periodically about life here at Lake Forest College.

We are two weeks away from the official start of basketball practice. As a student-athlete, your priorities, and balancing them correctly becomes a big part of who you are and what you do at college. Not to sound too preachy, but there is a reason the student comes before the athlete in student-athlete.

The two best things about Lake Forest College are the small class sizes and the close knit relationships you are able to form with your teammates. The small class sizes really allow for some great class discussion and enable you to form close relationships with your professors. The basketball team has always been very close, and it has really allowed me to form some close bonds throughout my years here.

Being a 5th year senior, I don't have a tremendously difficult class load, so I look forward to updating you with what’s going on as often as possible. I’ll think of a cool sign off later, but for now I’ll just go with, until next time.
